Hope Peace and Kindness text coloring pages

Peace, love, truth, joy, kindness, happiness. Originally this was a fabric that I designed for an upcoming contest on Spoonflower, but decided it would make a nice simple coloring page too.

I did a couple versions and hope you enjoy them.

Spring Peace Symbol- coloring page

Peace symbol

It's been a while since I've drawn anything this delicate, but I'm really feeling the spring vibe right now. There are seeds started on my shelves and in mini-recycled greenhouses on my porch and the weather is getting warmer even if there is still a ton of snow.

So I hope you enjoy this simple spring inspired quick coloring project!

Also just for fun- yesterday my husband took me out to see the ducks because it always makes me smile.

Crochet Peace Symbol Necklace

Crochet peace symbol pendant- with pattern!

I tease my daughter and tell her she's Hippie 3G. First generation was my mother, who was the right age, grew up in California, and was absolutely a hippie, political type.
Second generation is me of course. After growing up in home full of sprouting jars, needle point, homemade yogurt and hummus way before it was trendy, I was either going to be a hippie or go totally the opposite direction right? (I still hate carob though. ICK!)
The Amazing Turnip Girl is pretty proud of being the 3rd generation of our family to wear tie dye, march for Equality, sprout, garden, make things and hug trees.

One of my hangups is that I love peace symbol jewelry, but flat out refuse to wear a mass produced one. So I make my own, out of wire, wood and paper sometimes. This one, crocheted from American cotton is the newest one in my collection.

Crochet Peace Symbol Pendant

It works up fast, and only needs a very small amount of yarn and thread.

You will need:
  • Size G crochet hook
  • Size 7 steel hook
  • Worsted weight yarn- I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream in Psychedelic
  • Size 10 cotton thread- mine is from my stash and missing the label
  • scissors
  • needles to weave in ends
Stitch abbreviations:
  • ch= chain
  • sc= single crochet
  • sl st= slip stitch
  • st or sts= st or sts
American terminology used.

With yarn and size G hook-
Make a magic ring or ch:
Rnd 1: ch 1 (does not count as first st), sc 6 times in ring or first chain, sl st in first sc to join. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1 (does not count as first st), 2 sc in each stitch, sl st in first sc to join (12 sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1 (does not count as first st), sc in same st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*, repeat ** around, sl st in first sc to join. (18 sts)
Break off, weave in ends.

With size 7 hook and thread-

First you'll make an X shape, then it's attached to the yarn circle to make the peace symbol.

Chain 16, in second ch from hook, sl st, sl st the next 7 sts (8 sl sts)
Chain 8, in second ch from hook, sl st back to the middle of initial ch,
Chain 8, in second ch from hook, sl st back to the middle of initial ch,
Sl st up remaining 7 stitches. Remove hook leaving a loop open.

Explaining this next part is going to look confusing. Refer to photo for help.

Insert hook in top of yarn circle, pull thread loop through, ch 1 (does not count as first st) sc in same st of yarn circle AND top of thread X, sc in same stitch of yarn circle. 3 sc each in next 5 sts of yarn circle, 1 sc in next st of yarn circle, sc in same st of yarn circle AND end stitch of one side leg of the thread X, sc in same st of yarn circle, 3 sc in each of next 2 sts, Sc in next st of yarn circle, sc in same st of yarn circle AND the bottom st of the thread X, sc in same st of yarn of yarn circle, 3 sc each in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st of yarn circle, sc in same st of yarn circle AND end stitch of second side leg of the thread X, sc in same st of yarn circle, 3 sc in each of next 5 sts on yarn circle, sc in next st, sl st to first sc to join.

Chain 10, sl st to first chain to join. Bail made. Break off and weave in ends.

Make a cord to hang it. I did a simple twisted cord for this one, but a chain would work just as well.

The last week has been pretty sad. I found out that a close friend had passed away. Sam McAlpine was one of the people who helped me through the grief of losing my best friend in 2011. He told me then
"The people we lose are never gone, they never die completely. Who you hold in your heart and who inspires you will keep on having an effect on the world."
Sam was brave, compassionate, smart and just a wonderful man. He will never be forgotten, and his impact on the world was huge because of the people whose life he improved and the ways he helped them. He will never be entirely gone, and will continue being an inspiration to so many people.

Printable Peace Symbol Optical Effect

Peace symbol optical effect

It took a while to get it set up so I could do these types of optical effects in a 300 ppi printable. I'll bet this would look just nifty printed on Astrobrights paper!

The effect uses diagonal lines in opposite directions to create a maze like geometric look which has to be seen just right to see the word or image. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Click the image below for a large version to print and the smaller version above is on my FB page so you can share it!

Hippie Alien Coloring Page

Peace Alien

I really liked the alien that I drew for the printable box the other day, and decided it would be cute as a coloring page. This time I dressed the little alien in flared jeans and a peace symbol t-shirt. (as usual, if you'd like to use it for other crafty purposes, go for it!)

Yesterday was a lot of fun. We went out berry picking at a friend's house and got enough currants for a batch of jelly! My raspberry bushes are yielding a cup and a half a day that are ripening. Looking forward to making jam!

Peace Symbol Crocheted Earring Pattern

I wasn't sure about posting this pattern, so I asked on FB and a few people said they would like the pattern.

These earrings need to be stiffened to look right, but they are quick to make and are a lot of fun!

You will need:

  • size 10 crochet cotton- I used Aunt Lydia's Mexicana which is a wonderful rainbow variegated thread
  • size 7 (1.5 mm) steel crochet hook
  • tapestry needle
  • Mod Podge (still loving Mod Podge to stiffen crochet!)
  • water
  • earring wires
  • plastic covered cardboard (to pin the earrings on when blocking)
  • rust proof pins
Stitches used:
chain=ch
single crochet= sc
triple treble= tr tr

A triple treble is stitch that you yarn over 4 times, then insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch, (6 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook) , yarn over, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through final 2 loops.

For long stitches like that, each wrap on the hook is one more chain in length for the starting chain of the round. Since I use 3 chains as the start for a double crochet round, that means a triple treble is 6 chains for the starting chain.

Earrings- Make 2
Ch 4, slip stitch to make ring.
Round 1: Ch 6, tr tr in ring, chain 9, tr tr in ring 2 times, ch 3, tr tr in ring 2 times, ch 3, tr tr in ring 2 times, ch 9, slip stitch to join in top chain on starting ch 6.
Round 2: ch 1 (doesn't count as first sc), sc in each stitch around (NOT in the spaces, but actually in the stitches, it looks neater), slip stitch to join in first sc
Loop- ch 5, sl st in next sc. Break off and weave in ends.

Now adjust the triple trebles as needed in the ch 4 loop to look nice and neat. Mix equal parts Mod Podge and water- I actually keep the mixture in clean medicine bottle so it's ready to use for other things that need stiffening but only mix a small amount at a time.  Soak the earrings in the mix, and squeeze it out. You may want to blot it slightly with a paper towel. Pin the earrings on the cardboard to block. Nudge the triple trebles to be very close to each other and straight as possible, and make sure the loop on top is open. Let the earrings dry and put them on wires.

Peace Symbol Knot to Color

Knotwork Peace Symbol

Yesterday I got a pleasant surprise when Hippie Peace Freaks on FB shared one of my images. Reading the comments just made me so very happy. Since I was tipped off when Celtic Trims reshared the image, it inspired me to draw a knotted peace sign.

I hope you all enjoy coloring it! Usual terms (or lack of them)- feel free to use the design for any craft purpose.

Peace and Love coloring page and printable art

Click on the art above or below for larger printable versions of the peace and love printable art or coloring page.

If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that's his problem. Love and peace are eternal.

Peace Symbol Coloring Page

I hope you enjoy this peace symbol coloring page. There are a few more peace symbols if you click the label at the bottom of this post. Click on the image for a larger version to color.

My mother's birthday would have been Saturday. As it gets chilly and we start watching for snow, I think of her often. With We are the 99 Percent as well, I think of her often. She would have been there, with cookies, water and smiles to pass out and a lot of excitement and conviction. She was an activist who got a lot out of being active. She was a hippie who made yogurt and burned incense and smoked clove cigarettes. She wore shawls and peasant skirts with blazers and silk tops. The sweet scent of cloves and Nag Champa was so deep in her clothes that it was like a signature cologne. She was in Watts when it burned, down in the basement of a church patching up people to go back out on the streets. When President Kennedy made the call for people to do for their country, she signed up with Volunteers in Service to America and wound up in a tiny village in Alaska where she found her home.

So this peace symbol is for her, in her memory. Her absolute conviction that most people just want to live happy, free and in peace, her basic faith in humanity.

She was a dreamer who wasn't afraid to get in the thick of things to try to make those dreams reality. She was a hippie and individualist and just a little bit crazy, and I'm so very grateful that she was my mother.

Peace symbols

My darling husband totally surprised me with a Yudu machine for Christmas. Honestly, I was expecting a bottle of perfume or possibly a new Nano. But there it was, huge and wonderful.
So while I'm waiting to go to the craft store and get more emulsion sheets and screens for it, I've been working on ideas for the single emulsion sheet and screen that came with it, deciding what to print for that first screen is hard!
One thing I've been wanting is to make more peace symbol shirts. My kids love them, but like me, don't like mass produced shirts. So, this is some of the art I've been working on. It's in GIF format and 2 colors because it's for silk screening eventually. You can use it as you wish. Except you know.. mass producing shirts for very low wages in countries that don't protect human rights. Since it is a 2 color gif, it would be easy to remove the white background and use them for digital stamping. Or print it to color if you wish. My son loves the faux bois effects best so that's in the near future.
Click on the images for the full sized versions.

I also posted some digital delivery 1 inch circles with peace symbols on them in my Etsy shop
Here's an example at full size. 300 dpi, on your monitor it will show a bit bigger than it's meant to print!

Imagine Peace Box

Today's MP3 album deal of the day on Amazon is John Lennon's Imagine for 2.99. Maybe the only song you know on it is Imagine, maybe not.
John Lennon has been my favorite singer for most of my life. I love the song Imagine, most people do, but my favorite song on that album is actually Oh My Love. John wrote some of the most honest and beautiful love songs ever, that's one of them. The whole album is wonderful though. Honesty and self examination is present in many of the songs like Crippled Inside and Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth is an angrier song than Imagine about war and politics.
Anyway, it just makes me happy that it's so inexpensive.
I hope you enjoy this box inspired by the cover of the album and the song Imagine.
