DIY Craft Foam Crown Headband

diy craft foam crown project photo woman in a blue craft foam crown

I really meant to get in progress photos but it's harvest time up here and my family is doing a LOT of harvesting of wild plants and stuff.

I've started selling some of my salves in partnership with a good friend. You can follow her page and see what are doing together at Da Love Bazaar on Facebook

So instead of in progress photos, you get the printable pattern and a written explanation. That said, I plan to do more styles of these and will get photos of them in progress and it's the same method.

You will need:

  • The printable pattern!
  • Sheets of a flexible but firm material to cut them from- I used craft foam
  • appropriate glue for your material- hot glue works well with craft foam
  • sharp scissors
  • a blank headband
  • stuff to decorate it with- I used rhinestone tape with this one
  • clips to hold it while glue is drying if necessary
  • pen that will mark on your material
  • bottle or narrow glass that the base of the crown will fit on.

Click the image below and print it out at 100% or fit to page. This is pieces to lay out two crowns to cut them.
crown template

Cut out the pieces, then lay them out on your foam and trace them.

Cut out the foam.

Glue the two disks together, if you're using a glitter or textured foam, it's better to have the smooth/wrong side against your hair.

Curve the crown piece around, and use the small tab to connect the edges in a circle.

Trim a SMALL amount off the disks so they fit tightly in the base of the crown piece and run a bead of glue inside the crown to attach it.

Now is where you need the bottle that it fits over. I used a tall amber pill bottle. I put the crown upside on that, then used the larger tab to attach the headband. That protects the points from being crushed while you're attaching the headband. Align the headband on the crown base so the seam/connecting piece is in the back. That puts the center point in the front.

After all the glue is set, it's time to decorate it!!

It's really easy to make one of these.

The rhinestone tape is really easy to use and it's fun. It cuts easily with scissors and I have a lot of it because I use it for props frequently. These are Amazon affiliate links. Using them will not affect your cost but will help support this site.

I've been having a "Tiara Tuesday" on my FB page for a few month now and plan to have more crown and tiara projects this next year.

Batty Mandala to color

Batty mandala with a blank version to color

I started this mandala a week ago, planning on it being something quick to post. And I kept coming back to it thinking it needed one more dot, one more star. That maybe plain outlines didn't work and it needed solid black, then thinking that was too much and going back to outlines and not liking that.

So now I'm posting it. Because at this rate it's never going to be done. There is always going to be one more spot I want to add a star or dot too. I'm never going to be sure about outline weight or solid black. So I hope very much you enjoy this simple but more complicated than it needed to be batty mandala for Halloween.

Nearly Instant Halloween Accessories

Spider Bobby Pin Tutorial

I love this time of year. You can find all sorts of delightfully creepy things at the store, and shops open up just for Halloween.

I bought some very inexpensive spiders and bats to make accessories. The reason I got bright, colorful spiders is that they are less disturbing to the arachnophobe in my family.
To make the hair slides- the easy way is to use bobby pins that have a gluing pad. The thing is I don't actually like using those in my hair. So I did something a little different so I could use my preferred bobby pin type-

So for there easy spider hair pins, you will need:

  • Bobby pins
  • Instant type glue (I used Krazy Glue)
  • White craft glue (I used Elmer's Glue All)
  • Craft felt
  • Plastic spiders with a largish body
  • scissors
Craft felt is made out of plastic, so are the spiders. Krazy Glue works great for bonding them together. Cut 4 strips per pair of spiders of craft felt that are about 1/4 inch wide and the length of the spider body. Glue one strip to the bottom of each spider.
Spider pin tutorial 2

Slide the other strips into the bobby pins, and spread white craft glue on the craft felt on the spider, then press the strip in the bobby pin to the spider and hold for a couple minutes. Let the glue dry.
Spider pin tutorial 3

Wow. See? Insanely easy. Now you could do a lot to the spiders before gluing them to the bobby pins. You could cover them in glitter, or use a plastic safe metallic spray paint on them. Make them as fancy as you'd like.

Bat necklace!
Same thing, if you want, you can absolutely glitter or paint the bat. I went with plain black for mine.
Bat necklace tutorial

So for this one- you will need
  • Plastic bats- they come in all sorts of colors. I have some that are neon green!
  • chain
  • 22 gauge wire- half hard if you have it.
  • round nose pliers
  • wire snips
  • 1/8 inch hole punch
So this is just as easy as the project above, and if you're a jewelry crafter- you might have the supplies on hand. I used some copper chain that I had, and bronze 22 gauge wire. Bronze is fairly hard compared to copper- if you're using a soft wire, lightly hammer the hooks before attaching them to the chain to harden them slightly.

Punch a hole in the top of both wings with the hole punch. Then cut 2 1.5 inch pieces of wire and coil the top into a loop, then curl the rest into a hook with a little bit curled over at the end.
bat necklace tutorial
Put one wire on each end of the chain, and slide through the holes in the bat wings.

Back in 2011, I posted a project for Eyeball hair sticks using the plastic eyeballs that available this time of the year. That project is also an instant costume. Moms always have eyes in the back of their head!

Biohazard symbol knotwork- blank coloring page available

It's October- which means zombies, Halloween and Supernatural. Okay, Supernatural has absolutely nothing to do with this knotwork, but I'm really, really excited about it.

I hope you enjoy this knot to color as much as I enjoyed drawing it. It's a biohazard symbol, which are frequently used in pop culture zombie movies and merchandise.

Stained glass effect pumpkin gift box

I would rather sit on a pumpkin quote
It's nippy outside! After taking an enforced break due to an injury (pinched a nerve in my shoulder and my arm was going to sleep every time it was in the wrong position e.g.: drawing) I'm back and hard at work on my next coloring book.

I hope you enjoy this pumpkin printable gift box!

Printable Bat Box

I hope you enjoy this printable gift box! Last night my daughter was asking me about hashtags and a running joke on FB and Twitter is that I occasionally use #rosemarysfault. Rosemary and I are close friends who talk about well, nearly everything. This box is #rosemarysfault, because she's very fond of stained glass effect boxes and of bats.

Skull Projects and Printables

While I'm waiting for the parts for my computer- I thought it would be fun to repost some round ups of previous projects.

Skull Knitting Chart- this chart is one that I used for a dice bag for my son. The large skulls on the ties are table decorations that I drilled to make beads.

Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Boxes- these open topped boxes are easy to make and one of my favorite printable projects ever.

Skull Mandala to color

Skull and Crossbone Cupcake Toppers- I love this fan effect. No idea why I haven't done a lot more of these.

These are just a few of the skull projects available, because apparently, I really love skulls.

Witches coloring page

This isn't quite a true tessellation because it has overlap in the design. But it's very much like a tessellation.

This coloring page actually came from a design I was working on for my Spoonflower collection, and I posted the design to my FB page and asked if people would like to see it as a coloring page. Several people said they really would. So here it is, Halloween witches to color!

Cute Little Vampire Printable Box and Coloring Page

Cute Vampire- Halloween printables
It started with this cute little witch box, then I had to do a little Bride of Frankenstein's Monster box, and now a little vampire. All using the same body and face, with different dresses and coloring. I'm not sure if this is the last box in this series or not.

Click on the image for a larger version, print on card stock, cut out, score, fold, glue.

And here's the matching coloring page. As usual, in both JPG and transparent PNG formats.

The Bride printable box and coloring page

Frankenstein's Bride printables

After drawing the basic body/face for the Cute Witch box recently, I decided that I liked it too much just to have it for the witch. So here's a Bride of the Frankenstein Monster matching box and coloring sheet. Hopefully in the next day or so, there will be a vampire and maybe a zombie as well.
