Skull Projects and Printables

While I'm waiting for the parts for my computer- I thought it would be fun to repost some round ups of previous projects.

Skull Knitting Chart- this chart is one that I used for a dice bag for my son. The large skulls on the ties are table decorations that I drilled to make beads.

Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Boxes- these open topped boxes are easy to make and one of my favorite printable projects ever.

Skull and Crossbone Cupcake Toppers- I love this fan effect. No idea why I haven't done a lot more of these.

These are just a few of the skull projects available, because apparently, I really love skulls.

New Fabrics for Sale

I got my first set of Spoonflower swatches! I'm currently in the process of stitching up some of the toys before photographing everything, but I did post some of the new designs for sale. You can find all my Spoonflower fabrics that are for sale here.

I did 7 different colors of the Chef Skull design, and they all turned out very well. Here's an example of the colors. There will be photos later so you can see how they turned out printed.
One of my favorite is one of my knots in rainbow colors. I got it printed on silk just to see how it would look, and plan to order enough yardage to make a shawl with.
Now, back to stitching!

My new chou loom

If you look up the word シュシュ in Google, you'll find out that it means "chou" and that a chou is a scrunchie.
I asked Abigail of Abigail's Craft How To how to pronounce it, she said "shu-shu". There is a loom that's available in Japan for making them. It's a very simple pegged knitting loom. (Japanese site) This weekend, my husband and daughter teamed up to make me one.

The pegs are a little long and there are a couple other modifications that we've talked about making. But the chou on the loom is one that I knitted out of thrifted vintage acrylic yarn. I don't have any fuzzy or furry yarn handy or I've have tried it out of that. The wide open knit has a lot of stretch, and there is elastic in it as well. It's super easy to make scrunchies on the loom. They will probably make a few to sell in my Etsy shop. First there are a couple things that I want to work out.

I'm not a fan of acrylic yarn usually, this is from The Amazing Turnip Girl's stash.

This weekend I also made a pair of ear cuffs, that I'll be posting instructions for on Beadwork at BellaOnline later today. After trying a few ways to photograph them, I finally just put them on the loom.
I also made myself a very large hair bobble using tabletop skulls from Halloween. I'll post instructions for hair bobbles later this week!

Skull Knitting Pattern

In the next few weeks, I'm working on getting a lot of projects from my old LiveJournal posted up here for people who didn't see them the first time around.
This is from September 29, 2008

My first stranded knitting- A dice pouch made on homemade DPNs. No pattern, but the chart for the skull.

"Actually, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I only used two colors, and some of my floats were pretty long, so I wrapped? twisted? whatever.. them every 3 stitches, and it turned out pretty okay.
Even though my 2 yarns were a bit different weights. And it was acrylic yarn because I didn't see the point of using cotton with the gitd yarn which is acrylic."

Why is the first picture greyscaled? Because I'm lazy. I accidentally hit the color correction on the camera and it came out *BLUE* so I adjusted it a bit and then greyscaled it. But you get the general idea right?
The great big skulls are Halloween decorations, I picked up a "bag of skulls" then drilled them with my little hand drill and a largish bit.
The chart as I did it.

The chart as I'd do it again if I did it a second time.

Now the hard question, which kid is gonna snag the glow in the dark skull pouch? Because one will. I know that."

As it turned out, my son wound up with the pouch. He has a few dice pouches, not all of them filled with dice. I think his current dice pouch is a crocheted eyeball pouch that I made him.

Skull mandala to color

Click on the image for the larger version to color.

Yay! Halloween is tomorrow. Yesterday we went out for some Halloween fun. TG dressed as a white mage from Final Fantasy in a cape she designed and sewed by hand herself. She was very secretive about her costume. Just insisting "I have it." and refusing to answer any questions. It turned out lovely.
William decided on a quickie adventurer type and collaborated with his sister for his last minute costume. I'll post my pumpkin butter recipe tomorrow for everyone planning to cook their jack-lanterns.

Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Boxes

These boxes are open at the top, sort of like miniature gift bags. The inner dimensions of the box part are 3 inches high, 2 inches wide and 1 inch deep. Sugar skulls! I hope you like it. It was a lot of fun to draw. The tabs are a little over a half inch wide, so it can be assembled using a runner or double sided tape. Click on the images for larger versions, print to fit page.

Skull and Cross Bone Cupcake Toppers

When I made the prototype for these, I asked the Turnip Girl "What kind of design should I use for my blog?" I really expected an answer like peace symbols or maybe something Gallifreyan. Instead she surprised me by saying "SKULLS!" I said "Cute skulls?" and she said yes.
To make these, you print the circles on card stock and the fan strips on paper. Cut out and accordion fold the paper strips following the lines, overlap the ends and glue them together to make an accordion folded tube. Cut out the circles. I use my handy dandy 1 inch circle punch to cut out the circles, but scissors work fine as well. Gently flatten the tube into a circle and glue a toothpick into one of the folds. Then glue a circle to the back, oriented so the top of the skull is in the opposite direction of the toothpick. You can use something that's just a bit heavy to weigh it down so it dries flat. I used a bottle of hair beads. Then glue the second circle to the front.
2 sheets of fan strips and 1 sheet of circles makes 14 cupcake toppers with 2 circles to spare.

Jolly Roger earring patterns

I hope you enjoy this set of Jolly Roger Skull brick stitch earring patterns.

I was considering making them an e-book for 99 cents, but instead decided to post them for free. If you'd like to make a small donation using the button on the right I'd appreciate it, but it isn't necessary. You have my permission to make these earrings for sale as long as they are not being mass produced.
