Shamrock coloring page - 2015

I like using quotes from Irish authors on my examples for March. This quote is from George Bernard  Shaw, the man who wrote Pygmalion, which was turned into the musical movie classic- My Fair Lady.

C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland. Since I've been putting quotes on some of my thumbnails, using Irish authors for the designs with shamrocks or knotwork seems appropriate. Plus I really love this quote. As usual, if you'd like to share it, you can find it on my Facebook page! Currently there is a picture of a moose with it's tongue stuck out on there that I took yesterday!

Knotted Shamrock to color or embroider

Shamrock Box

For me, the first sign winter is almost over is that February ends. The stores fill with green for Saint Patrick's Days and chocolate bunnies and eggs for Easter. I can look at the snow and think "Soon, this will be a garden and yard again!"

Today we made chocolates. It was a lot of fun and very very messy. We filled them with jam made by a friend of mine. If they turn out well I'll post instructions later.

Shamrock Plaid Circle Tags

When I posted the shamrock plaid box the other day, I said that circle tags would follow soon. Then completely forgot to upload them. Here they are with an extra, printable "no pinches" wristbands. Click on the images for larger versions. The no pinches wrist bands are a smaller DPI than I usually use, print out to 8x10 inches.

I've been watching Xena lately, it was one of Kim's favorite shows. Meg who is a Xena lookalike keeps calling the chakram a shamrock and I'm terribly tempted to draw a shamrock chakram!

Did you know clover is an edible weed? I consider dandelions my first harvest, but clover certainly comes in fast behind it. Fireweed, which is less common in other places than it is here, and chickweed round out my "weeds" harvest. An Alaskan tradition is something called Homesteader's Honey, it's a honey like sauce that's made using fireweed, red clover and white clover blossoms with sugar. Since sugar is a staple that ships and keeps well, and it's less expensive than honey, it was a popular alternative for some families. I collecting blossoms for my mother when I was a kid, and she would put up jars to gift and for our family. She always just used our Cooperative Extensions recipe. While I buy locally produced honeys, this summer, I plan to make some just like my mom did. But she had a gorgeous lawn, where I've allowed my edible weeds to flourish, so I should be able to collect all the blossoms in my yard.

Homesteader's Honey

Ingredients:
10 cups sugar
18 red clover blossoms
18 fireweed florets
2 1/2 cups boilng water
30 white clover blossoms
1 teaspoon alum
Procedure
In large pot with boiling water, sterilize canning jars, lids and rings. For up-to-date information about safe home canning practices, see for approved canning methods .
In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add sugar and alum whule stirring. Continue to boil and stir until mixture is clear, may take up to ten minutes.
Remove saucepan from heat and add the blossoms and allow to steep for 15 minutes.
Pour through multiple layers of sterilized cheesecloth into the prepared jars. Allow ½-inch head space. Apply lids and bands immediately. Snug bands and invert jars, allow to cool.
Use as you would regular honey. If crystallization occurs, carefully warming uncapped jars in the microwave can liquify the mixture.

Last minute No Pinches paper wristband

Tomorrow is March 17th. You know what that means! At least one of your friends is going to forget. So with that in mind, here's a last minute project to print. 100 dpi and works on paper or card stock.

One sheet prints out 8 wrist bands you cut out, then cut the slits for putting it on someone. It's adjustable from 9 inches down to 6.5 inches to fit a wide range of wrist sizes. Cut the long side down at the next slit over from where it fits (as shown on the right in the photo) and use a bit of tape to secure the ends. Click on the image for the full sized version. Pipe cleaner Shamrocks

Pipe cleaners were one of my daughter's favorite mediums when she was little. She still likes getting a pack every so often to make sculptures. Add that to the fact I'm a craft stasher, and I found a box of 100 green pipe cleaners while I was organizing the other day. Green, and it's nearly Saint Patrick's Day, so I thought "Shamrocks!" These can be hot glued to pin backs or hair clips. 

So I told Dea if she wanted to make some shamrocks, I'd post instructions. I made one as well. Mine wound up being a lot more complicated than her's. She made 3 and instructions for the other 2 are coming after she shows me how she made them.

First the basics- How to make a spiral.

Start by curving the end of the pipe cleaner around a pencil or pen.

Then you'll hold that circle flat between you'r thumb and index finger.

Hold the end of the wire with your other hand and turn the circle to spiral the wire around that center. Adjust your hold as necessary until you have a spiral the size that you want it. You can spiral as tight or as loosely as you'd like.

So now you know the basics of making a spiral. Let's start with Dea's shamrock.

Take 2 pipe cleaners, and twist them together in the middle. Spread the ends so they form an X shape at right angles from each other.

Now spiral 3 of the ends in the same direction. It looks a lot like a triskele.

Trim the bottom wire or use it to twist around something to create an accessory or gift. 

Mine takes 4 pipe cleaners. Bend 3 of them in half and open them out to about a 90 degree angle. Spiral the ends towards each other to create open heart shapes.

With the 4th pipe cleaner, starting about halfway down the sides of the hearts, wrap it around the sides of 2 of the hearts to join them together. Then form a loop for the stem.

Now wrap it around the sides of the heart on the opposite side and the middle heart.

You can trim the wire at this point, but what I did instead was bring the wire back down the stem, and wrap the stem.

Use hot glue or E-6000 to attach the shamrock to something. No pinches!
