Look up to the sky

Rainbow and umbrella box

Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.
You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.
-Maya Angelou
For some reason, the word bumbershoot got stuck in my head last night, which inspired this printable rainbow and umbrella gift box. If you like the quote above, you can share it from my Facebook page- Don't Eat the Paste.

Click the image below for a larger version to print on card stock. Print, cut out, score folds, fold, glue!

This is what I wrote on my personal Facebook page yesterday about the word bumbershoot-
Thinking of drawing a rainy day mandala because right now I'm really stuck on bumbershoot as a very fun word. Apparently it's American slang from UMBrella and paraCHUTE. It's a ridiculous word that always means a certain type of umbrella to me.

Great big dark umbrellas. Umbrellas that won't fold, compact or ever fit into a purse or briefcase. It won't have ruffles or rainbows. This is a properumbrella, it's going to keep you and another person dry. On a rainy day, braver souls will come to be sheltered under your large umbrella. Other people will be too timid of the seriousness of it. This is an umbrella for the person who really doesn't want to be wet, and wishes they wore galoshes to protect their feet. They will step carefully to keep their feet dry. When it's not raining, these large umbrellas wind neatly, and the stick is long enough to be used as a walking cane. Nobody would dare attack a person holding a bumbershoot because they know it can be used as a weapon.

So a bumbershoot is the most serious of umbrellas, but with a very silly name. To me at least.

The umbrella mandala that I'm working on will hopefully be in my next coloring book, but I may do one here as well.

Rainbow Coloring Page

Rainbow art
I got a request for a coloring page based off the box posted last night. So here it is. It's not exact, but fairly close. Click on the image for a larger version. Print and color!

Still sick, but feeling a lot better and trying to get caught up! :) There will be a few book reviews in the next couple of days, and also a pattern for a kitty hat, and possibly a fashion scarf pattern. The hat is done, the fashion scarf is just started.

Rain Cloud Felt Pin

This isn't a step by step how to, more an overview.

I made this pin last night. The bead/pendant hanging from the bottom is from Cousin Corporations Jewelry Basics Acrylic series. It's a bit over an inch long.

You will need:

  • White craft felt
  • Embroidery floss
  • colored sequins
  • 2 small seed beads for the center of the eyes
  • tear drop shaped bead or pendant
  • large seed beads- those are from an E bead mix
  • a scrap of plastic (milk jugs are great for that!)
  • pin back
  • small amount of stuffing
  • scissors
  • thread
Take a piece of white craft felt about 6x2 inches, fold it in half so the 2 inch sides meet and cut out a rain cloud shape. I just freehanded a rounded shape.

I'm not a fan of big bulky knots for small projects like this to keep the thread from pulling through the felt, so what I do is tie the end of my thread in a knot big enough to keep it from pulling through a light colored sequn, and use light sequins on the back where the knots will be.

Embroider the face and finish off the embroidery with another sequin on the back. I also used two blue sequins that matched my thread for the eyes, held in place by seed beads.

On the back, stitch the little drop with the beads and tear drop, then make a running stitch to where you want the pin back to be. Cut a small rectangle of felt that will fit over the center bar of the pin back, and stitch it in place over the pin back.

Cut a small piece of plastic to sandwich between the two layers of felt. Stitch the felt pieces together with a blanket stitch around the plastic stopping about 3/4s of the way around to very lightly stuff it on the front side. Finish stitching.

Super easy! And you have a cute little rain cloud pin.
