Birthstone and Flower mandalas- a second option for October

Calendula and opals mandala

I've had mixed feelings about October's Calendula and Opals mandala since drawing it, but at the time I was facing a deadline and pretty entranced with square mandalas.
Then Spoonflower announced a contest for floral themed WALLPAPER. Imagine that. Wallpaper that you can color. If you're a fan of The Birthstone and Flower series of Mandalas you can get it as wallpaper after I order the proofs. Or if you don't want to wait that long, you can vote for it in the contest and if I get in the top 10 Spoonflower will print it before I finish filling out my next sampler of fabrics to order. Voting will be open on April 24th. The design I submitted has all the flower/stone/month names in the corner, double checked for accuracy and consistent layout, it does not have my URL on it. This is the mockup from the Spoonflower site for how it would look as wallpaper. It's laid out in 4 rows and 3 columns.
VOTING OPEN NOW!

So I redrew the October mandala to fit better with the rest of them. Click on the image for a larger version and print it to color.

December Birthstone and Flower Mandala

The last of the birthstone and birth flower mandalas- December!
December actually has a few options for a birthstone. Blue zircon has been traditional in the USA since the 50s. Turquoise, tanzanite, blue topaz and lapis lazuli are all used as well. Think blue! The flower is narcissus, which you can find all over the place in December as a bulb you can force indoors.

Happy birthday to everyone born in December! Which includes my son who was born on New Year's Eve.

October Birthstone and Flower Mandala

October's flower is calendula or marigold- another edible flower and a personal favorite for how bright and cheery they look. The birthstone is opal.

Sorry this is so late! After I replaced my computer, the same day, a windstorm knocked out my internet connection. So now I'm playing catch up.

September Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Morning glories and sapphires for September

Happy Birthday to everyone born in September! Choosing a flower for this month was hard. The choices are asters, forget-me-nots and morning glories. Morning glories won because they are a personal favorite. They also come in a lot of colors and because the shape of them is fairly ornate, a simple gem setting for the sapphires made sense.

August Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Poppy and peridot mandala for August

Happy Birthday to everyone born in August!

August is poppies and peridot. I love the alliteration and the light olive green of peridot makes it one of my favorite stones. This is probably one of my favorite mandalas to color so far in the series. Poppies come in so many gorgeous colors.

You can find the rest of the mandalas in this series here-

June Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Rose and pearl mandala for June

Happy Birthday to people born in June!
The birthstone for June is pearls, and the flower is the rose. I think it's safe to say that most people, even if their birthday is not in June would be happy with pearls and roses! June is the only month with a birthstone that isn't actually a stone, and there are a lot of kinds of roses. It was a hard choice what kind of rose to draw, but I'm pretty happy with this one. It was June which inspired the birthstone and flower series of mandalas after I drew this one last year.

May Birthstone and Flower Mandala

May is Lily of the Valley and Emeralds
Happy Birthday to everyone born in May!

Including me! Yay! (want to see my Amazon wishlist?)

The birthstone for May is emerald and the flower is lily of the valley. Lily of the valley is a flower that has long been a symbol for purity and humility. They are small, lovely and have an amazing fragrance that's very popular in perfumes. For the emeralds, I chose an emerald cut emerald of course.

April Birthstone and Flower Mandala

April Mandala- Daisy and Diamonds

Happy Birthday to everyone born in April! I'm sorry this is so late.

April's birth month flower is the Daisy! Specifically the common lawn or field daisy which generally have 34 petals which is a Fibonacci number. Daisies are one of the flowers that really follow Fibonacci sequences, up here it's mostly Shasta daisies which have 21 petals. 1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21-34...

Paired with this common flower is one of the most coveted gemstones. April's birthstone is diamond. If it seems boring to just leave the stones white, remember that white light has all the colors in it, and diamonds refract that light reflecting off the surfaces.

March Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Aquamarines and Jonquils for March

Happy Birthday to everyone born in March!

Time for a new birth flower/birthstone mandala! March is aquamarines and jonquils or daffodils which seems very appropriate because if you aren't living in a zone 3 or 4 area, you've probably got spring bulbs coming up now! The rest of us still have to force them in our homes for pretty spring flowers.

Click the image for a larger version, print and color. As usual, you can also use these in crafty applications.

February Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Violets and Amethyst Mandala

Happy Birthday to everyone born in February!
For the month of February, there are 2 flowers, violets and primroses. So I asked my friends list on Facebook which one I should use. Everyone who commented said they liked violets!
The birthstone is amethyst which leads me to this border. My mom bought me a lot of amethysts through the years because they represent protection. Most of them were delicate little sterling rings, and a lot of them were handmade imports with braids, twists and granulation and cabochon stones. So the settings for the jeweled border this time borrows themes from those rings. The bezel is a zigzag, set in a circle of granulated balls and mounted on a braid.

January Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Carnation and Garnets for January

Last June, on a whim, I did a birthstone/birth flower mandala with roses and pearls. At the time I thought monthly mandalas would be brilliant, but decided to start in January. So for the first mandala of this year to color, it's January's birthstone- Garnets surrounding a stylized carnation!
Carnations have petals in multiples of 5, with some few species having 40 petals, so this one has 40 petals. It's colored pink which stands for a mother's love. But by no means feel limited by conventional color choices. One of my favorite things is when people contact me on Facebook to show all the wonderful and creative ways they color these in.
I picked the oval faceted on the recommendation of my friend Rosemary who says it's her favorite shape for garnets.

Happy Birthday to all the people born in January!

I hope you enjoy this mandala to color. Click on the images for larger versions.
