April Birthstone and Flower Mandala

Happy Birthday to everyone born in April! I'm sorry this is so late.

April's birth month flower is the Daisy! Specifically the common lawn or field daisy which generally have 34 petals which is a Fibonacci number. Daisies are one of the flowers that really follow Fibonacci sequences, up here it's mostly Shasta daisies which have 21 petals. 1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21-34...

Paired with this common flower is one of the most coveted gemstones. April's birthstone is diamond. If it seems boring to just leave the stones white, remember that white light has all the colors in it, and diamonds refract that light reflecting off the surfaces.

Butterfly Rainbow Mandala to color

I want it to be spring already! I'm planning my garden, looking forward to seeing how my strawberries and raspberries come back and talking to my son about our plan for a dandelion recipes zine/ebook. (I'll make a limited number of physical booklets and also sell it as an e-book)

But it's still cold, and wintery and not anywhere near spring.

Easy to Sew Flower Project

If you follow me on Pinterest, you've noticed that I've been posting a lot of Japanese and Chinese links, including a bunch for sewn flower projects. This hair comb is inspired by those projects. I first saw the technique on a sunflower.
Since I couldn't get to my large fabric stash, I had to work with what I had on hand, which was some jelly roll strip that were on my desk, so that limited the size. This is a largish flower sewn to a side comb.

You will need:

• 3 colors of woven fabric
• a scrap of felt
• stuffing
• needle
• thread
• scissors
• hair comb or pin back
• chopstick or knitting needle to turn

Because it takes only a small amount of fabric, charms and jelly roll strips work great,  or scraps from sewing projects or salvaged scraps from old clothes.

All the pieces are built off of circles. Because the width of the jelly roll is 2.5 inches, that was the radius of my semi-circle for the petals and leaves. If you're using wider fabric, you'll cut 3 5 inch circles, and cut them each in half for the petals. For the leaves, you only need 1 half circle. The center is 2 inch diameter circle. The piece of felt to sew all the pieces to is 1 inch diameter.

Fold the petals in half, right sides facing each other, and stitch the straight edge. Knot off. Turn right side out using the chopstick to get the corner out completely. Do a running stitch along the rounded open edge, and pull tightly to gather. Repeat with the other 4 petal pieces.

Now stitch the 5 petals together into a circle, pull tight! Tie a knot.

Next you'll do the leaves. Cut the half circle for the leaves in half to make a quarter circle, fold right sides together, and stitch down the straight edge. Knot off, turn right side out, and stitch and gather the round bottom edge.

Now to do the center. It's just a little puff in the middle. Do a running stitch around the center circle, pull to gather just a bit, put in a small amount of stuffing, then pull it tighter. Knot off and stitch the center on top of the flower petals. Try to enclose the raw edges of the flower center, and cover the raw edges of the petals.

Flip it over, and stitch on the leaves.

Then you'll sew on the felt circle on the back to cover all the raw edges. Attach to a hair comb, pin back or barrette!

Looks like spring if you're as a eager as I am to start seedlings for summer gardens. We've been getting so much snow that my husband doesn't understand why I'm looking at seed catalogs and sighing happily!

Architectural Inspired Mandala to Color

This mandala to color is inspired by decorative architectural elements like rosettes. The outer ring pattern is called "Egg and Dart", the first beaded pattern is a "Bead and Reel" and the second is just a beaded pattern, surrounding a rosette. Elven Star

A friend of mine inspired this design. She recently got a heptagram pendant, and we were talking of elvish things. So I combined the "fairy star" with the silvery bark and green leaves and golden flowers of the Mallorn tree.
You have my permission to use this design for craft purposes such as embroidery or pyrography or just to color if you like it! Mallorn leaves are silver on the undersides, but it's the top of the leaves that show here!  100 dpi, click on the image for the full sized version.

Curve stitching forget-me-not printables

Curve stitching is interesting, and I always forget how fun until I run across something about it. It's creating curves using straight lines, or for people my age, it's the nail and string art that our parents did or had in the 70s. The coloring page and pattern are meant to be printed at 100 dpi and will be 8 inches across printed at 100 dpi. If you download the pattern and print it at a higher dpi it will print smaller. The pattern can either be used with a ruler and colored pencils or you could pierce a card and use thread to stitch the design. Follow the lines in the coloring page to make it look like mine. Click on the images for the full sized versions. The box is 300 dpi. I resized one layer and not the other from my 300 dpi original and really liked how it looked which is why the coloring is all outside the lines.

This time, what made me think of curve stitching was finding a vintage nail and string art book at a local book store. If you ever come to Anchorage, you might want to go to Title Wave Books. They have a huge collection of new and used books with pretty impressive cookbook and craft book section. I found 3 more vintage craft books for my collection, a liqueur recipes vintage book, and 2 Japanese beading books. I need to do a vintage craft book post again soon!
