DIY Craft Foam Crown Headband

 

I really meant to get in progress photos but it's harvest time up here and my family is doing a LOT of harvesting of wild plants and stuff. 

I've started selling some of my salves in partnership with a good friend. You can follow her page and see what are doing together at Da Love Bazaar on Facebook. 

So instead of in progress photos, you get the printable pattern and a written explanation. That said, I plan to do more styles of these and will get photos of them in progress and it's the same method. 

You will need: 

• The printable pattern! 
• Sheets of a flexible but firm material to cut them from- I used craft foam
• appropriate glue for your material- hot glue works well with craft foam
• sharp scissors
• a blank headband 
• stuff to decorate it with- I used rhinestone tape with this one 
  
• clips to hold it while glue is drying if necessary
• pen that will mark on your material
• bottle or narrow glass that the base of the crown will fit on. 
  
  Click the image below and print it out at 100% or fit to page. This is pieces to lay out two crowns to cut them.

Cut out the pieces, then lay them out on your foam and trace them. 

Cut out the foam. 

Glue the two disks together, if you're using a glitter or textured foam, it's better to have the smooth/wrong side against your hair. 

Curve the crown piece around, and use the small tab to connect the edges in a circle. 

Trim a SMALL amount off the disks so they fit tightly in the base of the crown piece and run a bead of glue inside the crown to attach it. 

Now is where you need the bottle that it fits over. I used a tall amber pill bottle. I put the crown upside on that, then used the larger tab to attach the headband. That protects the points from being crushed while you're attaching the headband. Align the headband on the crown base so the seam/connecting piece is in the back. That puts the center point in the front. 

After all the glue is set, it's time to decorate it!! 

It's really easy to make one of these. 

The rhinestone tape is really easy to use and it's fun. It cuts easily with scissors and I have a lot of it because I use it for props frequently. These are Amazon affiliate links. Using them will not affect your cost but will help support this site.

I was talking to a reporter about Duck Tape® after winning the contest, and he was surprised to find out that there were patterns for Duck Tape®. I'm sure he would be really astounded to know just how many. Like Duck Tape® on Facebook (I do!) , right now the cover image is a whole bunch of different designs and colors of tape. The Duck Tape community on there is helpful and supportive.

Here are just a few patterns and colors just to give you some idea what's available.
The metallic  Duck Tape®  that I used for the base is also available in silver.
To make a mini crown you will need:
Duck Tape®
Non stitck scissors- These things are the best thing in the world for Duck Tape® crafting! I like Westcott Titanium Coated Scissors
my pattern for a crown
ball point pen or permanent marker
elastic- cord or narrow elastic
bobby pins
optional- parchment paper (a tip that I got from Cathy who designs applique bags and purses, look for DuckTapeVillage on FB)

The basis for almost all Duck Tape® crafting is making a sheet, and you can find instructions on their site for doing that. You'll start by making a sheet big enough to fit the crown pattern. Click the pattern for a larger version, print and cut out.

After you make the sheet and check it on your crown pattern- outline the pattern with the pen.


Cut out the crown. Tape it closed. You don't actually need the tab, but it does make it a little easier. One of the nice things about Duck Tape® is that seam allowances aren't necessary! You can just butt edges and tape them.
After you cut out and assemble the crown, you can tape over the edges to make sure they are all covered, or use a marker on them or just leave them plain. I taped over them.

Tape a  piece of elastic inside the crown across the diameter at the bottom . This provides a base to clip it into your hair.  You could also do an X in elastic if you want to pin in down in your hair with more security.
Then the fun part, decorate it. There are all sorts of tapes, all sorts of ideas. This is where the parchment paper can come in handy. If you lightly adhere tape to the slick side of parchment paper, you can cut out appliques and motifs from tape to decorate your crowns and other items more easily.
Even if you aren't the official Prom King or Queen, you'll have your very own crown from your prom.

When I posted the Mad Hatter's Mini Hat, it was planned to be part of a set. Here's the rest of the set.

A mini Queen of Hearts crown that needs elastic like the Mini Princess Crowns and tea boxes. The size that fits Tazo tea bags. 

The tea boxes are blank and with quotes. I hope you enjoy them!

With the first set, I said that I was making a pattern for a felt crown for my daughter. 

She's thrilled with how it turned out.

  

It's stitched to a hair comb because her hair is so thick and wavy they work very well for her. For girls with finer or straighter hair a head band made of elastic, ties, or a barrette might work better.

Here's the pattern for the crown.

  

I used two layers of craft felt glued together with PVA glue. I spread a thin layer glue on a sheet of felt than folded it in half width wise. Put it between 2 layers of wax paper and set it under a book to dry flat. The next day, trace the crown pattern on the felt and in the jewel color, cut out 5 circles to fit in the top. With embroidery floss, all 6 strands together in a tapestry needle, blanket stitch around the whole thing, stitching the "jewels" in as you get to the top of each point. Butt the ends against each other and stitch them together. Stitch to whatever you are using for your hair. 

Lots of different things possible. Sequins, embroidery, whatever. I went with simple but do plan to play more with the pattern.

Here are printable versions if you'd like those instead. I didn't mark the holes for the elastic cord like the other crown, but the holes go roughly halfway between the center point and the back seam towards the base of the crown.As usual, click on the small versions for the full sized versions.

 

 

Printable Mini Princess Crowns

 

I hope you think these are as cute as Dea does. I'm working on a little felt crown for her to clip in her hair and decided it would make a cute printable party hat. Print on cardstock, cut out, glue tab then use a hole punch to punch the holes and string elastic through and knot to wear headband style.

Dea suggests a jaunty angle for a very cartoon-y look. 

I included a blank version to personalize or to print out for little or big princesses to color themselves.Click on the images for the full sized versions. I think they would look really pretty encrusted with glitter if you don't mind getting glitter in your hair!
