Batty Mandala to color

I started this mandala a week ago, planning on it being something quick to post. And I kept coming back to it thinking it needed one more dot, one more star. That maybe plain outlines didn't work and it needed solid black, then thinking that was too much and going back to outlines and not liking that.

So now I'm posting it. Because at this rate it's never going to be done. There is always going to be one more spot I want to add a star or dot too. I'm never going to be sure about outline weight or solid black. So I hope very much you enjoy this simple but more complicated than it needed to be batty mandala for Halloween.

Fun Hood Pattern (crochet)

Originally when I ordered this chunky yarn from Darn Good Yarn it was going to be for a shawl- which I frogged 3 times. Then told my husband "What I really want is a hat!
A fun hat. It was before our day cruise and I wanted a fun and warm hat to wear on the cruise.
Once I had that figured out, it just flew off the hook- even with keeping notes for writing up the pattern.

The yarn is stunning. As good as the colors look, the spin is lovely, very regular and the texture is so very soft. When I pulled it out of the the envelope, I told my husband that he had to touch my yarn.

3 skeins of Super Soft and Chunky Reclaimed Silk Yarn
Size K hook
Scrap of cardboard to make pom poms or tassel
Scissors
large yarn needle for weaving in ends.

American terminology
ch=chain
sc= single crochet
dc= double crochet
sl st= slip stitch
st or sts= stitches
rsc= reverse single crochet- you can use a single crochet, it will look a little different.
repeat ** means repeat the steps between the asterisks.

Ch 1
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 7 dc in first ch, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc),dc in next 7 sts, sl st to join (8 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat ** 2 more times, sl st to join (12 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next st and each st around. Sl st to join (12 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat ** 2 times, sl st to join (16 sts)

Break off yarn.
Count 5 stitches from break off and join in new skein

Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), sc in same stitch, sc in next 32 sts
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), rsc in each st across.
Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), 2 sc in first st, sc in each st until last st, 2 sc in last st (35 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), rsc in each st across.
Row 5: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), 2 sc in first st, sc in each st until last st, 2 sc in last st (37 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), rsc in each st across.
Row 7: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), 2 sc in first st, sc in each st until last st, 2 sc in last st (39 sts)
Row 8: Ch 1 (does not count as first sc), rsc in each st across.

Break off.

Rejoin yarn in the back, and single crochet around the base of the hood, at the tips of the ear flaps, put in 3 single crochets to work around the corner. sl st to join.
Ch 1, single crochet around, at the center of the 3 sc at the tip of the ear flaps, sc, ch 50, sl st back up ch, sc in same st, continue sc around to tip of the second ear flap, repeat.

Make 3 pom poms or tassels, one large, 2 small. Attach the large one to the pointy top of the hat and the other 2 to the cords for the hood.

Glacier Day Cruise- lots of photos

One thing about living in Alaska is that there is literally a new gorgeous photo opportunity around every corner. I live in a postcard, surrounded by mountains and National Parks. When you get out of Anchorage, that's even more true. My husband and I took a short vacation to Seward to take one of the last day cruises of the year with Major Marine Tours.

There are some things that I didn't take photos of- like I saw a couple puffins in the water and just wanted to enjoy that moment, same with the Dall's porpoises playing by the boat.

Major Marine Tours has a partnership with the National Park Service, so we had someone from there who was very knowledgeable about Chugach National Park, the history, the animals and the trees in the area. That was wonderful and if you are ever in Alaska, I can't recommend this experience enough- it's educational and beautiful. You get to see places that don't have power lines, cell towers or buildings for as far as the eye can see, it's just Alaska. Built by nature in all it's beauty.

I took 300 pictures. Narrowing it down to just a few was hard, but I hope you'll enjoy them.

We started driving down the highway at 6:00 to Seward, which means we got to watch the dawn coming over the mountains.

 The whole highway is a scenic bypass. You will drive by mountains, through valleys, and by large lakes. It's a gorgeous drive.

I took this photo through the windshield because the fog tracing across the road was so neat looking. There was virtually no traffic.

This is the small boat harbor in Seward, Alaska

And this is the catamaran that was used on our cruise. In the middle of tourist season, they use larger boats, but this was perfect for the number of passengers. The name of the boat is the Melissa Ann.

While we were in the harbor waiting to leave, we watched an otter. It was the first sea mammal we saw.

The next couple of photos are examples of the type of scenery there is- I took a lot of photos of scenery and narrowing it down was hard.

Then we saw Steller sea lions and heard them "roar".

So many glaciers. It was hard to choose photos of those because there were a lot.

More of that "I live in a postcard" scenery. 

It's impossible to get any more Alaskan than a bald eagle flying over a glacier. 

Seagulls. Because my best friend loves seagulls and I need to get a picture of them for her. 

Like I said, I took hundreds of photos, and it was hard choosing the ones to post. But here's an extra from our drive back into Anchorage. 

Flying Panda coloring page

Okay, maybe it's actually an angel panda, not a flying panda- but flying pandas are a joke in my family which I referred to in a 2010 post with a cross stitch pattern here- Flying Panda Cross Stitch Pattern and I got an email from a nice lady named Michelle who said she liked it- but she didn't cross stitch or bead, and would I please do a box with a flying panda?

I do have a plain panda box (from 2009, please excuse the formatting!) but not one with wings. And I WILL do a winged version, but wanted to do a coloring page first. 

This coloring page is a lot more simple than most of my coloring pages. It's appropriate for kids, but it's also a good one people who want to draw in patterns. So hopefully you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed drawing it.
